| | Children's Orthodontics in MaroubraFrom $7900 only!Orthodontics can be a very effective method to correct crooked or mal-positioned teeth. With orthodontic treatment, over time, the teeth will become aligned, making it a safe and effective treatment with long-lasting, economical and visually pleasing results. There are significant advantages to wearing braces during childhood. A growing child’s teeth and jaws are more easily manipulated, as opposed to adults’. In addition, childhood orthodontics decreases, and at times eliminates developmental flaws and discrepancies, reducing the need for future treatments, including surgery. Of course, the biggest benefit of undergoing orthodontic procedures in childhood is having a beautiful and healthy smile in adulthood. When it comes to your child's oral health, contact our dentist in Maroubra today. |

The recommendation: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This doesn't mean immediate treatment, it means we assess developing teeth and jaw growth to identify any early issues.
Why early evaluation matters:
-Early evaluation identifies problems before they become severe
-Some bite issues are easier to correct in children whose jaws are still growing
-Early treatment may prevent the need for more extensive treatment later
-We can monitor jaw development and tooth growth over time
Not all children need early treatment: Many children are fine with evaluation and monitoring. Treatment typically begins when most baby teeth have been lost, and permanent teeth are coming in, usually at age 10-14.
Crowded Teeth: When there's not enough space in the jaw for all teeth, they become crowded and may overlap. Crowded teeth are harder to clean and more prone to decay.
Bite Problems:
-Overbite: Upper teeth overlap lower teeth excessively
-Underbite: Lower teeth extend beyond upper teeth
-Crossbite: Some upper teeth sit inside lower teeth
-Open bite: Front teeth don't meet when mouth is closed
Spacing Issues: Large gaps between teeth may indicate missing teeth or undersized teeth compared to jaw size.
Jaw Development Issues: Sometimes the jaw itself doesn't develop properly, affecting tooth alignment and bite.
Habits that affect teeth: Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or mouth breathing in young children can affect tooth development and jaw growth.
Traditional Braces: Metal brackets and wires are the most common orthodontic treatment. They're effective for all types of alignment issues. Children often personalize braces with colored bands.
Ceramic Braces: These work like traditional braces but use tooth-colored or clear brackets for a more aesthetic appearance. They're popular with older children and teenagers concerned about appearance.
Clear Aligners (Invisalign Teen): For appropriate cases, clear aligners can straighten teeth without obvious braces. They're removable, making cleaning and eating easier. Invisalign Teen includes compliance indicators so parents can monitor wear time.
Palatal Expanders: In some cases, the upper jaw is too narrow for teeth to fit properly. A palatal expander gradually widens the upper jaw, creating space for teeth. This is often used in younger children while their jaws are still developing.
Retainers: After braces are removed, retainers maintain tooth position. We may recommend fixed retainers (bonded to teeth) or removable retainers worn at night.
Step 1: Initial Consultation. We examine your child's teeth and jaw, discuss concerns, and explain options. X-rays or 3D imaging may be taken to assess jaw development and tooth position.
Step 2: Treatment Planning. If treatment is recommended, we create a customized plan. We discuss the timeline, cost, and what to expect. We answer all your questions and address any concerns.
Step 3: Treatment Begins. For braces, we place brackets on teeth and attach wires. For aligners, your child receives their first set of trays. We provide clear instructions on care and what to expect.
Step 4: Regular Adjustments. For braces, we adjust wires every 4-8 weeks to gradually move teeth. For aligners, your child changes to new trays regularly. Regular appointments monitor progress.
Step 5: Retainer Phase. Once teeth are straight, retainers hold them in position. This phase is crucial, teeth will shift if retainers aren't worn as directed.
Comfort: Initial discomfort is common but usually mild. Over-the-counter pain relief helps if needed. Mouth sores from brackets can be managed with wax. Most children adjust quickly.
Duration: Most orthodontic treatment takes 18-24 months, though some cases are faster or slower depending on the severity of the bite problem and how quickly teeth move.
Dietary changes: With braces, we recommend avoiding hard, sticky, and chewy foods that can break brackets or bend wires. With clear aligners, your child can eat normally (they remove aligners to eat).
Oral hygiene: With braces, special care is needed to clean around brackets and wires. With clear aligners, regular brushing and flossing continue.
Activity and sports: Your child can participate in sports and activities wearing braces. A mouth guard protects teeth and braces during sports.
Talk positively about it: Frame orthodontics as an investment in their confidence and smile, not a punishment or negative thing.
Involve them in decision-making: Let your child have input on bracket colors (with braces) or treatment type. Involvement increases cooperation.
Set expectations: Explain that some discomfort is normal, but it passes quickly. Discuss timeline and care requirements.
Be supportive: Encourage good oral hygiene and wearing aligners as directed. Regular encouragement helps.
Make appointments easy: Help your child attend appointments and maintain good habits throughout treatment.
This phase is crucial for long-term success. Teeth naturally want to shift back to their original positions. Retainers prevent this.
Fixed retainers: A thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth permanently holds them in position. It doesn't restrict eating or appearance.
Removable retainers: Wear these at night to maintain tooth position. Your child will need to use them regularly. Possibly for life to prevent tooth movement.
Compliance is key: Many people regret not wearing retainers because their teeth shift back. Consistent retainer wear prevents this.
